Barbara Rae CBE RA FRSE is a Scottish painter and printmaker. Her bold style and use of intense colours and depth has been celebrated for many years. The subject matter echoes her interest in the landscape around her, travel, and environments both natural and manmade. After studying painting a the Edinburgh College of Art, Rae spend her early years on a travel scholarship in France and Spain, and teaching at school in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Rae was prolific with her work, regularly exhibiting, and went on to be elected as an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy and elected president of the Society of Scottish Artists. She was also appointed as a member of the Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland, a member of the Royal Academy of Art, a Royal Etcher, Fellow of the Royal College of Art, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Rae was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1999. Rae’s work is in collections of institutions across the United Kingdom as well as internationally.
